Rent a Tent/Tepee Campground at Quiet Waters Park

Looking to get away without going far away? For a fun, affordable getaway close to home, check out Quiet Waters Park in Deerfield Beach, where the campground offers 25 Rent-a-Tent sites and two tepee sites. Tent sites feature a canvas platform tent already set up for you to move in. Each site comes with water and electricity, as well as a grill, picnic table and a fire ring. Tepee sites are similarly equipped. The Family Fun Package offers a two-night stay (Fridays and Saturdays only) for four campers for just $55. The Escape Special (offered Sundays through Thursdays only) offers a one-night stay for four campers for only $20 per site. Two more campers can be added to each package $3 each. A special look back at the legendary shipwreck of the S.S. Copenhagen is the topic for Lecture on Wednesday, May 23, 7:30 p.m., with Franklin H. Price, senior archaeologist with the Florida Bureau of Archaeological Research, on the historic S.S. Copenhagen shipwreck. It’s All About “Butterflies” at May Nature Tots Program

Broward County nature centers will again offer its award-winning Nature Tots program on a monthly basis. Kids, ages 2 to 4, and their parents can join a park naturalist and learn about nature through stories, songs, arts and crafts, and more. Theme and activities vary each month, and preregistration is required. The theme for May is “Butterflies.” The program will be held on May 24, at Secret Woods Nature Center in Dania Beach on May 24. Get Ready To Get Muddy!

The Muddy Shoes Hiking series returns to Secret Woods Nature Center in Dania Beach. This popular series allows participants to weave and scavenge through the woods with a park naturalist, discovering native habitats and searching for wild animals. Closed-toe shoes, a walking stick and drinking water are a must for these off-the-trail hikes, along with a willingness to get wet and muddy. Hikes are scheduled for Sundays, May 27 and June 24, from 9:30 a.m. to noon, at a cost of $6 per person. The nature center is located at 2701 W. State Rd. 84, Dania Beach. Call 954-357-8884.
Gallery Exhibit Features “Textures and Patterns in Nature”

The exhibit hall at the Anne Kolb Nature Center at West Lake Park will host a free Gallery Exhibit now through May 29. The theme is “Textures and Patterns in Nature” by Carol-Ann Rogus and Albert and Jennifer Seidenstucker. The nature center’s exhibit hall is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is no charge to view the art exhibit, although there is a per-person fee of $1 to tour the exhibit hall. T.Y. Park Now Offering Art Classes

T.Y. Park in Hollywood is now offering art classes, for youth ages 6 to 17, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 to 6:15 p.m. Whether your child likes to paint, build, doodle or draw, instructor Cassandra Anda will inspire creativity with classes in drawing, painting, printmaking, and clay sculpting.
- Arts, Crafts and Confidence classes: Tuesdays, 4 - 5 p.m., ages 6 to 8, and 5:15 - 6:15 p.m., ages 9 - 12. The monthly fee is $46, which includes supplies.
- Artbeat Evolution classes: Thursdays, 4 - 5 p.m., ages 13 - 15, and 5:15 - 6:15 p.m., ages 16 - 17. The monthly fee of $43 also includes supplies.

Hit the Trail at Tradewinds Horse Camp

It’s time to saddle up for the 2012 Tradewinds Horse Camp, for ages 9 through 16, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays starting on June 11 and ending on August 16. Each four-day session includes daily riding instruction. Riders will also learn about riding equipment, tack and general horse care. Other activities include videos, indoor/outdoor games and farm activities. Registration is now open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily at the park office.
